Everyone is curious.
About something. But curiosity isn't simply peeking into your sister's
diary. It's mixed with concern, wonder, sometimes even anger. It's a complex
emotion, one which no person is immune to. For children its the primary
emotion. For adults, its a necessary one.
1. Write a one page conversation
between a parent and a child in which teh child is curious about something
and asking a lot of questions. Be sure the parent gives us insight through
his/her own thoughts into some larger issue.
2. Choose a large theme (death, hope, depression, etc.). Next, choose a metaphor to represent that theme (eg. death is a pen out of ink). Write a scene in which someone's curiosity about the chosen metaphor reveals the larger theme.
3. Curiosity is about
finding, discovering. In two to three pages, write about how a character's
curiosity leads to an important discovery. Some ideas to help get you going:
a girl curious about her young lover's true feelings looks through his
dresser; a young boy curious about sex looks through his older brother's
things; a child curious about her biological parents looks through her
adopted parents' saftey-deposit box. Don't be limited by these. Try to
think up one of your own.
