WriteArt! Exercises: Hate

"We create an environment where it is alright to hate, to steal, to cheat, and to lie if we dress it up with symbols of respectability, dignity and love."
-- Whitney Moore, Jr.

"I tell you, there is such a thing as creative hate!"
-- Willa Cather

1. Avoiding cliche and remembering to use strong, active verbs, write a scene in which a character acts out his/her hate.

2. Imagine a character who hates his situation. What is that situation? Why does he hate it? Choose an external thing to focus that hate on. Write a paragraph in which the hated thing helps the reader to understand what the character is really feeling.

3. Write a paragraph that describes a man's love for his wife (or wife's love for her husband). Then write another paragraph that describes his hate for the same character. Remember to give your character's spouse a flaw. Read both paragraphs over and make sure they are equally convincing emotionally.
