WriteArt! Exercises: Loneliness

"I have never found a companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers. A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will."
-- Henry David Thoreau

1. Write a one page scene of a happy occasion -- a wedding, baby shower, graduation, etc. Describe the event from the point of view of a lonely character. How do all the other people look at that character? How does the event make the character feel? How does the character physically express the loneliness?

2. Write a scene in which a character who is alone is also lonely. Don't let his being alone solely define his loneliness.

3. Choose an emotion from the list below and write a one page monologue in the voice of a character who, though feeling that emotion, denies it.
Anger
Love
Happiness
Fear
Jealousy
