WriteArt! Exercises: Restlessness

"What difference is there between us, save a restless dream that follows my soul but fears to come near you?"
-- Kahlil Gibran

1. Construct a list of fresh ways to describe this kinetic emotion.

2. If you did no. 1, go back and look at what you wrote. Which description best fits a teenager who wants to leave home? An adult who is unhappy with a marriage or love affair? A teacher who feels the students have no interest in learning? Someone who, as Eberhardt wrote, "shall always be haunted by thoughts of a sundrenched elsewhere"? Write one sentence using both the character and the emotion.

3. If you did nos. 1 and 2, use a character from no. 2 and a physical description from no. 1. If you didn't, just create them now. Expand them into a one page scene, showing both internal and external restlessness.
