WriteArt!

Hello and welcome to WriteArt. This page is set up and maintained (occasionally) by Jolanta Komornicka. So what is WriteArt? It's a place for writers. Of all kinds. It doesn't matter what genre (or lack thereof) you write in. What matters is that you write, that you enjoy it, and that you're interested in learning more about the craft.

Writing is, in many ways, the forgotten art. When someone says "art," most people picture great paintings, statues, clay pots, graceful dancers and a bohemian lifestyle. Very few think of a plain piece of paper and a pen. Fewer yet conjur up a word processor or typewriter. The closest to traditional "art" that writing has ever attained in the public eye is Medieval manuscript illumination (which is beautiful, btw). But words themselves are art. Ask any linguist. And a writer is an artist. We paint with words, sculpt with punctuation, and dance with grammar (most of us get our toes stepped on once or twice). It doesn't matter what form the writing takes. It can be poetry or prose, fiction or non. It doesn't matter whether it's a Romantic epic or a contemporary graphic novel. They're all valid.

Like any other art, writing doesn't come easily. Even if you are born talented and determined, you still have to work. Learn the grammar, work out the plot, close the phrase, and finish with something at least vaguely intelligible. Writers are lucky, though. In our society, our art surrounds us -- even if in its "lower" forms. We read constantly. And not just words. We read body language, weather, and even the stars. All of this comes through when we put pen to paper. If we notice that an overworked man pouts his lip when he discovers he locked his keys in the car, suddenly there's a new character ready to come alive. Characters are amalgamations. They're the writer's dreams, in many ways. We pick and choose what we like, what we don't, throw it together into a body form, and voila! A character!

So what does this site offer other than a commentary on how writing is art? It offers writing. No, this is not a gallery. At least, not at present. What it is is a collection of essays (mine and those of others) on the craft of writing. It is a place to get inspiration. This site has just begun, so as yet there's not much here. However, I hope to soon develop a host of essays, lists, and writing exercises.

That's enough for now. I hope you enjoy your visit!
